The video game genre that changed the world

Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Hexen, Half-Life.Doom Title Screen

These are some of the games that totally rearranged the landscape of computer gaming in a few short years. Video games haven't even been around that long, after all (our first home system was Pong). But in video game years, the early nineties was centuries ago.

I'm one of those people that falls asleep at a horror movie, so when a friend told me that there was this new game out and it was sooo scary, I was unimpressed. Then I played Doom for the first time in a dark, smoky room (exact composition of smoke unspecified, but you can guess). By the time I was done, I was actually twitching from all the adrenaline in my system.

Now I know that modern games and graphics are far, far better than these old relics, but being an old relic myself, I have to say that these games are still fun. In fact, it's odd that they are, but I suppose it says something about how little the basics of the first person shooters have evolved over the past two decades. You look, point your absurdly large weapon at the target, pull the trigger, and get out of the way of any return fire. Rinse and repeat. Along the way you pick up reloads and various enhancements, but the basic game mechanics don't really change all that much.

So what's here? Mostly archive copies of all of those old games and the software that you need to actually play them (unless you just happen to have an old DOS machine sitting around). I'll probably set up some forums in the not-too-distant future, but for now, if you have something that you want to see on the site, just contact me via the contact form on the site, and I'll do what I can.

Enjoy
